Examples of Mixed Light

Here are a few pictures that I said I would put up to show examples of color casts given off by different types of light. As you can see there is an obvious color cast throughout each picture that I did not see at the time I photographed it. In each instance the lighting looked like a neutral white light to my bare eye, but of course different light sources record differently on color film.

It's obvious that there is a yellow/ greenish tint to this picture. This is because this cafe was lit in mostly tungsten light with some flourescent. I could have neutralized this cast to accurately depict skin tone if I'd used a light blue filter over my lens or added more yellow light (which would result in more blue being added after processing) during printing but I chose to leave it alone because I like the warmth that the yellow light gives to this picture.

This picture is an example of what a professor of mine, Brian Johnson, would call "light soup" because it has so many differen types and colors of lights mixed. In the distance you can see the green tint of a flourescent lit office building and the Haagen Daas store is all lit in tungsten light. This picture was taken in a large square in Shanghai, China at night so I needed a relatively long shutter speed.

This is just the sort of image you can expect with a long exposure time (this one was probably 30 seconds) and mixed lighting. To my naked eye this scene seemed to be lit in a neutral, if not a little bit yellow, light. However when recorded on color film for such a long exposure time a totally different effect is achieved.

Here's a good example of what a little color correction can do to enhance your image. The picture on the left has that early evening color cast to it and everything looks a little blue/cyan and dull. Using Photoshop CS I added some yellow and red to the image to make it warmer, then turned up the saturation and made the image a little darker overall. The image on the right is the result of these changes. Looks a lot better, doesn't it? It does look a little dark but this picture was taken at dusk.
I hope that these pictures help to illustrate the point that I was trying to make on Episode 5 and my lecture on color temperatures of light. Interesting results can be expected if you experiment a little bit with mixed lighting or long exposures.

Ben Folds Concert

Tonight the wife, my younger brother Ted and I will go to the Chicago Theater in er... Chicago to see Ben Folds in concert. I like to see Ben Folds when he comes to town as he is one of my favorite performers and really puts on a good show. Unfortunately I've missed his last 2 or 3 appearances in Chicago. The Chicago Theater is an especially good venue to see him at because it's large and beautiful inside. The one thing that I really hate about concerts though is the smoking. I grew up in a smoking household so I dont' hate smokers and I can accept the smell but I do hate when I am surrounded by thousands of smokers and am forced to breathe in the toxins that they're breathing out. Whats more is that I leave the smoke-filled concert halls, smelling of cigarettes and it makes me want to barf. Here's hoping that there will be no smoking at the concert tonight because the Chicago Theater is a classier sort of place. I once saw the author David Sedaris give a reading there and I dont think there was a smoke issue at all. Maybe if I do get "smoked on" and am compelled to vomit I can do so on the nearest smokers. Why not? Fair is fair, right?

I got another joke off of a homeless person yesterday but I'll save it for the next podcast. It's just not worth typing it because there wont be the high hat sound after the punchline. I'm the sort of person that really needs that emphasis at the end of my jokes. Ba-Dum-Chink! Just like that.

Until next time.

Episode 5 Coming (relatively) Soon!

Hello loyal readers/ listeners. In case anyone is interested in where my 5th podcast is and when it is coming I have an update for you. I've been working on this one for a while (started writing ideas down the day I finished ep. 4) and there is a LOT of material to cover. A lot of it revolves around school life or projects I'm working on for school. Sound boring? Well it might be but I'm a student so everything revolves around school for me now so of course it will manifest itself in my blog and podcast.
I've not recorded it all or mastered the tracks even but I'm hoping to have something for all of you who want it by the end of this coming weekend at the latest. If there is anything you'd like me to mention or a question you would like me to address in my next blog post or podcast leave a comment about it on the blog and I'll do what I can.
Another major portion of the next podcast is coming from the Entertainment Junky... there's enough stuff to O.D. on and bury you in the carpet here. I've been a glutton for media the past week. I've been reading a lot of cool stuff, watching some good (and bad) movies/shows and sampling some really cool music. You'll be able to have a taste of these things too on my next podcast but since there are soooo many things I want to talk about I might have to spread it out over a few shows. "The Unleaded Show" (ep. 4) went for nearly an hour, and for good reason, because there was a lot to be said and the good vibe of the interview kept us both chatting energetically. However, maybe an hour of material and 30mb of a show is too much for you guys to handle in one dose? When I listen to podcasts I love the long ones like "The Real Happy Hour" which usually goes for an hour and leaves me wanting more at the end. "Cinecast" is also a relatively long show but they put music in the show and take breaks every now and then. I could go either way: short or long.
Also a few of you may have had trouble getting on the blog (latentimage.unleadedlogic.com) in the past week. I guess the server has been crashing. There is a backup blog here. If you're reading this from the backup blog then come and check out the "real" blog here! Now... welcome to the real world. The sites are similar but the real blog has an air of freedom about it... ahhh Can't you just smell it?

Latent Image Podcast 4: Unleaded Logic

This episode is a very special early edition of the Latent Image Podcast. Why special? Well it's special because it's coming earlier in the week than expected and also because joining the podcast as a special guest is recording artist/ producer "Unleaded Logic"! This episode is devoted to him and his music. He very kindly agreed to sit down with me and do an interview over Skype and I am very pleased with the results. I did play a little practical joke on him which was all in good fun and we both got a good laugh out of it. I think if you listen closely to the podcast you can hear his jaw drop and hit the floor.
I hope that you all enjoy this as much as I did. If you have questions or want to get in contact with Unleaded Logic let me know. His site is UnleadedLogic.com.

Many thanks to Mike of Unleaded Logic for the interview and excellent conversation.

Latent Image Podcast: Episode 3: A Real Podcast

Okay everyone, here's the first real episode of my podcast. The other two that you may or may not have heard were just tests I used in order to get this whole thing off the ground. So now that those are out of the way here comes the real thing. You can listen to it by clicking this link: Episode 3: A Real Podcast or you may add my podcast feed to your ipod download software. I dont think that you can find my podcast on iTunes. I tried to submit it but it just didn't work. I suggest using iPodder sofware. You can download it for free. You'll find it by googling iPodder. This software works for both Mac and Windows. Here is the rss feed that you need to copy and paste into your podcast software: http://latentimage.unleadedlogic.com/podcast_xml/podcast.xml.

I will have pictures coming shortly to correspond with the podcast. I talked about a few images that I made and I'll share them with you all. Here's what you can expect on the show:

* Weekly review of my photographic assignments:
- I talk about the view camera, a little bit about how it works and the panorama image I made without having to move the camera's tripod an inch. Sound impossible? Well it's entirely possible with a view camera because if you shift your front standard to the left and your rear standard to the right, take a picture and then do the opposite movements and take another picture you will have a panoramic photo made up of two smaller photos.

*Entertainment Junky Files:
**Movies**
- I talk about a movie I just saw and a few that I'm going to see. I describe my Netflix experience and what dvds I'm waiting for in the mail. Current Netflix movie: "God Is Great, I'm Not" starring Audrey Tautou (Amelie, A Very Long Engagement) Next Netflix movie: "Hotel Rowanda" a lighthearted movie about genocide. (Just kidding)
-Movies coming out in theaters this weeked:
Thinking of seeing: "Two For The Money"
Planning on seeing: "Waiting" (update: I saw this movie tonight, Sat. the 8th and was let down)
[Free audio clip: Dane Cook]
**Books**
- I finally bought Bret Easton Ellis' latest novel "Lunar Park" (see previous post on this subject for more info) and am looking forward to reading it after I get over my H.P. Lovecraft fixation.
**Video Games**
- I bought Killzone for PS2 and talk about my feelings towards it. (awww)

*Late Night Radio*
- I share my discovery of a bizarre radio show I was unfortunate enough to hear on a very sleazy late night radio station.
[Free Audio Clip: "Rosco and Butch"

So that's it for the podcast. I'd love to hear some feedback after you all listen to it. I think it may have ran a little long (46ish minutes) but who is counting anyway? More to come soon, all. Take care.

Podcast

Hello everyone,
Remember how I've been saying that I'm going to make a new site and eventually a podcast? Well no... the new site is not ready thanx to my laziness but thanx to my good friend Mike and his donation of a Logitech USB headset and downloading a crap load of software and (secretly) adding more ram to my computer I have now begun to lay the foundations of a Latent Image podcast. I'm really excited about this and I did a really cheap 1 minute mockast. Then after figuring some out how to use the programs a bit better made another quick one. Have a listen. As soon as I figure out more about podcasting there will be vast improvements.

Listen to the podcast here: Download

You may also add this url as the RSS feed to your Ipod software (i.e.: Ipodder or Ipodder X) With this URL you will get automatic updates of my podcasts when I add new ones. Copy and paste this:
http://latentimage.unleadedlogic.com/podcast_xml/podcast.xml
If this doesn't work please let me know. It worked for me when I added it to my Ipodder program.

360 Digital Panorama

This is an image I made using my Nikon N70, Kodak E100 slide film and three 300 wps strobes. This one image is made up of 17 individual pictures that were scanned into a computer and seemlessly pieced together on Photoshop CS to create a 360 degree view of this room. I will be posting more information about this picture and the techniques and difficulties I had making this at a later date.
